'Misery' again!

The picture is of Anthon Chekhov

'This is a story of how one man's grief is ignored by the public, just when he needs someone's attention the most. A story of how we blind ourselves to other people's sufferings because we do not want to deal with the pain associated with it.'

  1. This short story painted a great background of those times in Russian Empire, St.Petersbourgue. It could alos bring about the black side of the world; to show us the the other sort of people: the cold-hearted. Unfortunately, they are any where & in all times.

I shall say that winter time along Patapov misery match perfectly... As if to show the cold & motionless attitude of that officer, then the drunk fellows, towards his dreadful grief and need of mutual understanding and symphathy...
It's sad how he ends by sharing his misery with a mare... Touching indeed...

  2. this is life , simply ..
every one has his own grief his own misery..
sometimes when you feel hurt and pain in your heart and you cant find someone who could hear you, you will not be attention to the others problems beacause you actually need to someone to hear you,or sometimes the humanbeing cant stand hear any thing about lifes misery they need sth makes them forget what they already have. sometimes, the people, if they want to listen to someone they pay attention to someone they dont know as they will not be affected too much of what he will say as he is strange to them or usually as in this story the will not hear also to the poor people to the weak people.

  3. The author was in very bad need to some body to listen to him but no body cared . as he still has the compulsive urge to ventilate his sad emotions, so he is obliged to to talk to his mare and and she , in turn obliged to listen to him too.
this tells the need of human being to communicate his feelings to others to relieve his tension and anxiety, we notice that, in our palestinian community ,in such situation , people give good social support in expressing grief and extending condolences to the bereaved.

  4. I think ,Misery" is not unlike a documentation of human suffering, specifically in the loss of one's child. Chekhov achieves a detailed portrayal of one man's grief, his attempts to ease his heartache, and his final comfort in sharing his story with his horse

"Misery" begins with the question "To Whom Shall I Tell My Grief". This question summarizes Lonas preoccupation and is the basic conflict of the story which is not resolved until the end.the sad and lonely themes of "Misery" are reflected in the indifferent and angry characters, sad conflict and cold dreary setting. Symbols of death, stagnation and suffering contribute to these themes greatly reinforcing the mood of the story.

  6. "Misery" I like it because it reflects our life, and how we deal with others feelings, nobody care and nobody wants to listen to others sorrows and sadness.

  8. This is not ubnormal behavior or stange response of European people because European society is not socially united . No body shares the felling with another . No cooperation between forign people . but our society is completely different because we are governed by Islam , morals and ethics .
if this man complain in our society I think he will find a lot of people who listen to him .

  9. the story describes "around two motionless figures, an animal and a man" Iona and the mare are very much alike.
Iona Potapov, the main character in Anton Chekhov’s short story, "Misery," is yearning for someone to listen to his woes, and this story captures the agony of Iona who has been recently bereaved following the death of his son and his need to speak about his grief and unburden himself. The indifferent and unsympathetic world has no time to respond to his misery. But in our society we find alot of peaple who listen to him,as my friend Islam mentioned above.

  10. A story of how we blind ourselves to other people's sufferings because we do not want to deal with the pain associated with it.'
Nice stated sentence ! It is life that we are always running after our happiness and trying to have our ears deaf , our eyes blind and our tongues dumb when we are not enjoyed .
It is hard to feel pain and not to pour out what in your heart to another open heart . another heart may alleviate your pain and stroke on your shoulder kindly telling you it is not the end of the world . Still there are things in life that worth living . In that minute only ,you feel it is not the end of life . That gives you the motivation to go on your life . . .
    Thanks

  11. Misery" it isnot normal problem or specified on the European . It is found all over the world and in our society,no one can pear the other people. We always hope to find people who hear us but it is not find . If you find now or sometimes they cannot pear you for along time.
Every one at this time look for himself. The writer also has a wide imagination . he make the personal talk with the animal but the animal donot understand.

  13. i think sometimes especially in our times, the animals (pits) might be a good listiners to our problems or griefs even if they will not response or advice, but at least we can feel better by just talking. To share your griefs with any body " even if not human being" is better than to keep it and let make your life more miserable.

  17. Misery is a short story that talks about Iona Potapov who is in mourning for his son died. He is depressed and wants someone to tell him how his son died and how he brings his cloths from the hospital. Actually, he wants a fellow to help him to get over, but no one listens to him.Instead,he is treated in bad way and no one gives him attention .In the end, he finds the best one , his mare, so he tells her what he feels. The story takes a powerful look at the lack of human involvement and compassion towards one man's grief
Misery is a story for all society. It is a short story with fictional characters, but a true to life dilemma that we will all face some day. It is a story of the inexplicable nature of our society and its overwhelming sense of self importance and lack of selflessness. My initial reaction to this fictional short story was one of introspection. "Misery" made me examine myself and what I believe to be an inherent trait of humankind, the exaggerated perception of self-importance

  18. Misery is a story for all society. It is a tale about poor communication, and how people become so full of their own needs that they show no consideration for the desperation of others.

  19. I think that eveyone needs to talk about his problems to overcome them ,but he should talk to people who know like his friends.

  23. Sharing the feelings is very important for us, humans. But if this sharing is not from heart to heart it's better not to be. It's a well known fact that talking is a need. We can't live without talking, from which we consider a good listener is a good friend. Iona here tries to find this friend in the faces of the passengers. But the problem is that no one cares...
I think that the idea of minding your own business and not letting the others in, whether by talking or by listening, is a big mistake.

  25. i love this short story so much

it shows to us that life is very tough

people are so selfish , it is their human nature .

the old man wants simple thing , he just needs someone to complain to him.

i like that the old man make good relation ship with his animal . he talks with it to have some hope.
