'Misery' again!

The picture is of Anthon Chekhov

'This is a story of how one man's grief is ignored by the public, just when he needs someone's attention the most. A story of how we blind ourselves to other people's sufferings because we do not want to deal with the pain associated with it.'

.

Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth!

I am in blood
Stepp'd in so far, that, should I wade no more,
Returning were as tedious as go o'er.

--Macbeth, Act III, scene iv

The Old Man and the Sea

'In all of Hemingway’s works, he told two stories, one that was visible on the surface, and one that was hidden beneath the surface. '

Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Too much snow is a traditional symbol of death

Forget about American and European yearning for a white christmas that can relate snow to joy! Snow in Western literature is usually seen as a traditional symbol of death. It can mean something different, even more promising, to those who live in Gaza, but this is not the same to Iona in 'Misery' or the persona in 'Stopping by Woods'. Here, it is a signal of solitude and depression. Some people see snow as a shroud; what is used to cover a corpse. Look at the picture students of Gaza. Trees, which are usually seen as a symbol of life and growth, are but dead things covered with snow.
Anyhow, I came to like your comments, especially the debate about what snow should indicate, as well as the part about destiny. But I think you need to speculate on things again in the light of what has just been given. Is the man overburdened with life and its hardships? Is he thinking of . . . .?

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

"The theme of "Stopping by Woods"--despite Frost's disclaimer--is the temptation of death, even suicide, symbolized by the woods that are filling up with snow on the darkest evening of the year."
